PCL Air Coupling Identification

Bridge Engineering identification guide

PCL Air Coupling Identification

Identify the likely compressed-air coupling family from the plug profile, sleeve operation, thread or hose connection and any body markings before ordering a replacement.

Do not identify by thread alone: G, R, Rp and NPT connections describe the pipe connection, not the quick-release plug profile. Two products can share a 1/4-inch thread and still be incompatible.

Photograph and measure these features

Plug profile

Photograph the adaptor square-on and from the side. Include the tip, sealing diameter, groove positions and shoulder.

Coupling operation

Record whether it uses a sliding sleeve, twist release, push button or controlled safety venting action.

Connection and duty

Record male/female thread or hose-tail size, working pressure, air demand and whether the installation is fixed or portable.

Common PCL and compatible families

Family Identification clues Application notes Do not assume
PCL UK Standard / Airflow Traditional UK workshop adaptor profile; often described as UK Standard. Airflow couplings are widely used on workshop equipment. Check the exact coupling action, connection size and required flow. A similar-looking industrial plug is not automatically UK Standard compatible.
PCL Vertex PCL coupling range used with Standard adaptors on supported assemblies. Confirm whether the coupling body is Vertex and the adaptor is the matching Standard profile. Do not identify the range from hose colour or hose size.
XF-Euro Euro adaptor profile; PCL XF products commonly carry blue identification detailing and are designed for higher airflow. PCL lists compatibility with recognised Euro-profile families, but verify the exact plug and pressure rating. Euro profile is not the same as UK Standard merely because both use common workshop thread sizes.
Safeflow / push-button safety Safety-oriented release intended to control disconnection or venting. Identify the operating sequence and matching adaptor family, not only the external body shape. Never defeat the safety mechanism or substitute an unchecked conventional coupling.
Schrader Standard Distinct Schrader coupling and adaptor family; standard versions use a twist action on the cap for release. Common in fixed compressed-air applications. Confirm Standard versus Heavy Duty. Schrader Standard and Heavy Duty adaptors are not selected only by thread size.
InstantAir / other interchange profiles Separate PCL families and interchange ranges including PF, A-style, ISO B12, KF, Mini and multi-fit products. Use body markings, plug dimensions and a current interchange table. A multi-fit coupling does not make every plug safe or suitable for the system duty.

Details needed for a reliable match

  • Clear photographs of coupling and plug together and separately.
  • Any PCL, Schrader or other manufacturer reference stamped on the body.
  • Plug tip diameter, body diameter, groove positions and overall insertion length.
  • Coupling release method and sleeve/button colour.
  • Thread standard and size, or hose internal diameter.
  • Maximum working pressure and required airflow.
  • Application, compressor and connected air tool.
  • Whether a safety coupling is mandatory for the site.
Safety: isolate and fully depressurise the airline before removal or measurement. Use a coupling and adaptor rated for the system pressure, temperature, media and release requirements.

Send photographs for confirmation

Bridge Engineering can compare the profile, connection and operating requirement before supplying a coupling, adaptor or complete hose assembly.

Technical basis: current PCL product-family and published product information. Confirm final compatibility against the current manufacturer data.
