Oil Seal Identification

Measure Shaft × Housing × Width

The most useful starting point is the three boundary dimensions, followed by the visible lip arrangement, case construction and application conditions.

dShaft diameter

Measure the surface the sealing lip runs on.

DHousing bore

Measure the outside diameter of the seal or housing bore.

BSeal width

Measure the overall axial width of the seal.

Note the marking, lip count, spring, dust lip and case style.

V-Ring Profile Guide

VA versus VS: measure more than the shaft diameter

VA and VS are V-ring profile designations, not O-ring types. A shaft diameter alone may not distinguish the profiles, so compare the body proportions and send a side-profile photograph.

VA / VR1

Common standard profile used across general industrial drives, motors and gearboxes.

VS / VR2

A wider-bodied profile used where the VS design is specified; confirm body dimensions as well as shaft size.

VL / VR3

Compact profile for restricted spaces and applications where a narrow V-ring is required.

VE / VR4

Heavy-duty, large-diameter profile often used as additional protection for a primary seal.

VRME / VR6

Heavy-duty large-diameter design that can be clamped to the shaft for demanding arrangements.

2. How to measure

Inside Diameter (ID)

Measure straight across the inside of the relaxed ring.

Cross-Section (CS)

Measure the thickness of the ring cross-section.

Outside Diameter (OD)

Measure straight across the outside of the ring.

Tip: Always measure an unstretched, relaxed O-ring for best results.

What details are needed to identify an oil seal?

Provide the marking where visible, shaft diameter, housing bore, seal width, lip arrangement, case style, operating fluid, temperature, shaft speed and clear photographs.

Can the O-ring Finder confirm the correct material?

No. The finder helps identify a closest reference size. Compound, hardness, chemical compatibility, pressure and final suitability must be confirmed separately.

Are VA and VS O-rings?

No. VA and VS are V-ring profile designations. Compare the side profile and measure body width and overall height as well as shaft diameter.

Can Bridge Engineering source V-rings and shaft-repair sleeves?

Yes. We can source common V-ring profiles, specialist sizes and suitable wear sleeves where a shaft sealing surface is worn.
