Choose the right starting point
Bearings and housed units
Record the full designation, including prefixes and suffixes. For housed units, include both bearing and housing references. Start with the Bearing Finder or our bearing identification guide when markings are incomplete. Dimensions alone do not confirm suitability.

Belts and pulley arrangements
Photograph the complete belt marking and profile, and tell us how many belts work together. Keep the length designation and units exactly as printed. See Gates belt identification and Optibelt profile and set guidance. A similar length or tooth shape does not establish interchangeability.
Chains, sprockets and couplings
Include the complete component reference and machine details. For chain enquiries, note the strand count and attachment arrangement as well as confirmed measurements. What information should I send?
- References: manufacturer, full part number and photographs of all markings.
- Dimensions: confirmed measurements with units; label estimates clearly.
- Application: machine model, drawing or parts list, and any documented operating or precision requirements.
- Supply requirement: quantity, required date and whether an exact specified replacement is needed.
For lifting or other safety-critical applications, the exact approved specification and competent assessment are essential. Take measurements only when equipment is safely isolated. These notes support an enquiry and do not replace selection or installation instructions.
