A failed bearing is evidence. Preserve it, photograph it and examine the complete arrangement before cleaning or disposal.
Common clues include:
- Smearing or discolouration: possible inadequate lubrication, sliding or excessive temperature.
- Dents at rolling-element spacing: possible impact during fitting or static overload.
- Fine indentations and worn tracks: possible particle contamination.
- Rust or etched surfaces: possible moisture ingress or unsuitable storage.
- Fretting on a seat: possible movement caused by an unsuitable or damaged fit.
- Fluting or washboard-like raceway marks: possible electrical current passage.
- Spalling concentrated on one side: possible misalignment, deflection or uneven load.
- Broken cage or rolling elements: often secondary damage; look for the initiating fault.
Do not diagnose from appearance alone. Review load, speed, temperature, lubricant condition, fit, alignment, seals and vibration history. A condition-monitoring trend is often more useful than a single reading after the failure.
