Hearing protection should reduce exposure to a safe level without unnecessary overprotection that prevents communication or awareness of alarms.
- Assess the noise exposure, frequency characteristics and work pattern.
- Provide suitable protectors and clearly identify hearing-protection zones.
- Offer models that fit the user and work with helmets, eyewear and RPE.
- Train users in correct fitting and care.
- Inspect seals, cushions, bands and disposable plugs.
- Keep protection clean and provide hygienic storage.
Control noise at source wherever reasonably practicable. Hearing protection supports those controls; it does not replace them.
