  1. Make the equipment safe and preserve evidence.
  2. Describe the failure without guessing the cause.
  3. Record operating time, load, speed, temperature and recent changes.
  4. Photograph the part in position and after removal.
  5. Compare with a known-good component or baseline.
  6. Review installation, alignment, lubrication, contamination and environment.
  7. Separate initiating damage from secondary damage.
  8. Identify the most likely cause and evidence against alternatives.
  9. Define a corrective action that controls the cause.
  10. Verify after return to service and update the maintenance plan.

If the same fault returns, reassess the diagnosis rather than repeating the same repair.
