RPE selection requires specialist care. The risk assessment must identify the contaminant, form, concentration, exposure limit, oxygen conditions and required protection.
- Use a respirator or breathing apparatus type suitable for the hazard.
- Select an adequate protection factor.
- Check filter type, capacity and change schedule.
- Make sure the equipment is compatible with other PPE.
- For tight-fitting facepieces, arrange suitable face-fit testing.
- The sealing surface must be clear of facial hair and anything else that prevents a seal.
- Train the wearer to fit, check, clean and store the equipment.
- Maintain reusable RPE and keep appropriate records.
Filtering respirators do not supply oxygen and are not suitable for every atmosphere. Never enter an oxygen-deficient, immediately dangerous or unknown atmosphere without a specifically designed and managed system.
